Death Valley National Monument was established in 1933 by President Herbert Hoover’s presidential proclamation to conserve the scenery and the natural and historical objects therein. Encompassing 1.7 million acres, it was then the second largest unit in the National Park System. On October 31, 1994, an additional 1.3 million acres were added, and then the national park status was bestowed when President Bill Clinton signed the Desert Protection Act. Death Valley is now the largest National Park in the lower 48 states. Included in the new acreage are seven new ecosystems, there significant mountain ranges, additional habitat for a number of endemic and endangered species, and there vast desert valleys.
